The National Symphony Orchestra (NSO) regrets to announce the cancellation of the first season of concerts due to take place from January 25 to March 23 owing to an acute lack of funds.

Following the SABC’s withdrawal of funding of some R10 million per annum in early 1997, the NSO has continued to play for three years through the support of subscribers, receipts from performances and the generosity of donors while approaches to central and regional government for financial support have not met with any success.

Unless funding or pledges of some R10 million is forthcoming by January 23, the services of 66 permanent employees of the NSO will be terminated after a concert to be held on that day. The NSO has recognised the commitment and loyalty of its employees during the period of uncertainty, often to the point of offering to forego pay cheques in previous cash flow crises.
