NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. Baroque 2000’s next concert will feature music by Africa’s only Baroque composer, Sancho. London based violinist Darragh Morgan, whose flair and enterprise delighted Durban audiences during the year he spent directing Baroque 2000 is touring South Africa and will play Vivaldi’s Violin Concerto op 4 no 4 with the ensemble on August 27 at 11h30 at St Olav’s church in St Thomas Road, Musgrave. Darragh Morgan will also direct the ensemble for the other items in the programme: Geminiani’s Concerto Grosso op 3 no 1, JS Bach’s Ricercar from the Musical Offering BWV 1079, and pieces from Ignatius Sancho’s Minuets, Cotillons and Country Dances. The remarkable Sancho, Africa’s only Baroque composer, published four collections of his music during his lifetime which was spent in London. Probably born on a slave ship sailing from Africa to the West Indies, Sancho became known as ‘the extraordinary Negro’ and as symbol of the humanity of Africans. Tickets at the door or Computicket, enquiries to sursouth@iafrica.com or to 031 312 5539.
