NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. Durban’s legendary guitarist, Madala Kunene, has been synonymous with creative unorthodoxy for decades. Madala has an inexplicably luminous presence which transpires through his music. He has grabbed the attention of many locally, and abroad. The eclectic musician has been creating aesthetic sounds with his instrument of choice, the guitar, in Durban and around South Africa; as well as abroad. His great sense of permissiveness has led him to work with a diverse array of artists, locally and internationally. He has a string of albums under his name and has featured in countless more. The down-to-earth musician is renowned for his deep-rooted, trance-like traditional style of music. Madala’s first guitar was a hand-made guitar from an oil tin and string which he used to play at the beachfront as a young boy until he later got his hands on an acoustic guitar. He hasn’t stopped creating music since. Madala Kunene will feature on a Nite Out Session at Vestige Bistro & Bar on July 27, with the show starting at 20h30. Further information from Derryn or Lisa of Vestige Bistro & Bar, at corner of St. Thomas and Musgrave Road on 031 201 7767.
