Daughter of King Dinizulu and mother of Dr Mangosuthu Buthelezi, Princess Magogo is widely regarded as the leading expert on Zulu music of her time as well as its most influential exponent. Opera Africa director Sandra de Villiers recently announced that the organisation would create as its fifth major production an opera dealing with the life and talent of Princess Magogo.

The authentic African opera would be written, composed and performed by Africans in an African language with English sub-titles. Professor Mzilikazi Khumalo will compose the score while Duma kaNdlovu will write the libretto. Bongani Ndodana will arrange the orchestration. South African diva Sibongile Khumalo will sing the role of the princess and well-known artist Andrew Verster will design the costumes and sets. The world premier will coincide with the commemoration of the centenary of the birth of Princess Magogo.
