NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. Young award-winning South African pianist Mark Nixon will perform a classical recital at Studio M1, SABC, Old Fort Road in Durban on January 7 at 19h30. Mark, who attended the Drakensberg Boys Choir School, is a graduate of the University of Cape Town, the Amsterdam Conservatory and the Guildhall School of Music, London. He has won numerous prizes in South Africa including the prestigious Samro Overseas Scholarship and the inaugural Nederburg-Unisa National Piano Competition (1998). He is one of three South Africans to play in the Unisa International Piano Competition this month. The programme is to be hosted by the newly formed Music Revival organisation which is run by well-known pianist Christopher Duigan. “Mark Nixon will play the brilliant and lyrical Sonata in F by Mozart, Beethoven's Sonata in A-flat Op 110 and the richly hued Six Piano Pieces Op 118 by Johannes Brahms, written in the last years of his life,” says Christopher. “He will also perform Debussy's Estampes which incorporate marked Oriental and Spanish influences.” Tickets R30 at the door or reserved through Christopher Duigan on tel/fax: (033) 342-3051 or e-mail chris@musicrevival.co.za
