NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. The popular music ensemble, Baroque 2000, is to perform a concert on June 26 which features Tartini's violin concerto in D minor, the composer being known particularly for his Devil's Trill Sonata which he said was played to him in a dream by the devil. Now becoming increasingly renowned as one of the masters of the Baroque era, Tartini wrote a number of concertos for the instrument. The soloist is Valentina Koleva. Corelli’s Concerto Gross no.5 is one of that composer’s remarkable contributions to the genre; he wrote the first great Concerti Grossi and they constitute the climax of his own output. The first movement of Rameau’s 6th Concert will be familiar to many as one of the models for Respighi’s celebrated pastiche, The Birds. Rameau’s four movement piece is full of grace, charm and humour. The concert on June 26 takes place at St Olav’s church, 214 St Thomas Road and starts at 11h30. Book at Computicket or at the door.
