In May this year, Bojangles Entertainers presented their highly successful hit show The MJ Experience. For Christmas, they will produce an original “Durban musical” called The Candyman which they describe as a “family musical written in the tradition of Oliver and Annie.

The musical is set in Durban and traces the antics of a group of street children raised in a secret hideaway by four hoboes; Prof, Rotti, Maria and Benny. They come into conflict with “The Candyman” and his gang. The show is filled with comedy and energetic dancing set to original music composed by Hamish Kyd and Chris Ruiters. Choreography is by Janine van Wyk who worked on the hit shows Cantina Tequila and Millennium Meltdown. Vocal arrangements are by popular opera and musical theatre performer Bronwyn Forbay.

The Candyman is written by Hamish Kyd, who has also written The Motown Story (Playhouse Cellar), Southern Groove (Playhouse Cellar), Taxi Jam (co-writer); Jimbo (Playhouse Drama) and The MJ Experience. The Candyman is directed by Dawn Gaillard who makes her debut in mainstream theatre. The musical will run at the BAT Centre from December 11 to 23. Depending on public demand, the show may be extended to run from January 2 to 16.
