NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. In 1994, a two piano revue called A Handful of Keys opened in a 160 seat theatre in Johannesburg, South Africa. It had an advance of booking of 94 seats and was due to play a five week season. The first season sold out within 10 days and three years later, it closed to full houses, in a 1,000 seat theatre, having played to more than 120,000 people in over 330 performances. It had won eight theatre awards nationally, and attracted the kind of critical and public reaction that producers dream of. In 2001, with a dynamic new performance partnership bringing fresh sparkle to this timeless original it was revived for a short season of benefit concerts and attracted the identical raves from the critics, standing ovations, and soaring box office. The show has been packing them in since, won another award, and has enjoyed hugely successful national tours in 2002/03/ and 2004. A Handful of Keys has performances on November 5 and 6 at 19h30 at the Schlesinger Theatre at Michaelhouse. Bookings on 033 234 1049 or e-mail: vonmem@mweb.co.za
