NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. The popular Afrikaans group, Die Grafsteensangers, made their national debut at the Klein Karoo National Arts Festival in 1999, arriving in a hearse and in full costume on a Oudtshoorn street, singing old Afrikaans "tranetrekkers". Since then, this group has become one of the most sought after Afrikaans groups to appear on arts festivals, television, theatres and anywhere where they are invited to perform. Known only by their characters such as "die ondernemer" (the undertaker), "die weduwee" (the widow), the group’s tongue in the cheek approach to Afrikaans tradition and sentiments is enjoyed by young and old. Dressed in post depression Afrikaner attire, the group of 12 artists display with drama and song sentimental songs with humour and satire. Die Grafsteensangers will perform at the Suid-Natal High School in Port Shepstone on April 1, at the Port Natal School in Umbilo on April 2 and at the ATKV Natalia Holiday Resort on April 3. All performances at 19h00. Tickets R50 from SYMPROD on Tel/Fax: 031 465 9216 or e-mail: symprod@absamail.co.za.
