NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. The popular Kerimov Trio start a fresh adventure into the classical repertoire with one of the most likable of classical trios - Antonin Dvorak’s Dumky Trio. Composed as a set of Dumka - songs of tears and joy - this classical work draws heavily on gypsy or Slavic idioms. It seems an obvious choice for the Kerimov Trio who have spent so much time playing popular programmes of Gypsy music. The wild shennanigans of the “Dumky” is contrasted by a rare but charming trio from Franz Joseph Haydn. Haydn’s trios are rarely performed but are always elegant and witty. Three pieces by the celebrated contemporary composer Arvo Part complete the programme. Part’s music, appealing through its directly lyrical, serene and passionate elements, has been used in countless film and television soundtracks. The three works performed are Fratres, Spiegel im spiegel and Mozart Adagio The concert takes place at Wedgewood, Hilton, on February 29 at 16h00. Tickets R50 includes fruit juice plus tea/coffee and treats. Booking essential on 033 342-3051or e-mail: chris@musicrevival.co.za or
