The Metro FM Music Awards, held for the first time in Durban, was a glitzy affair that attracted the cream of the contemporary music industry. Some 16 awards were presented in different categories. Each winner in category had been voted for by the public via Metro FM phone lines which had been open since September.

Well-known top Durban jazz musician Ernie Smith won the Best Jazz Award, over two of the biggest names in South African jazz music, Hugh Masekela and Don Laka.

Ladysmith Black Mambazo were presented with the Metro FM Special Award. This is a new category designed to honour an artist or group that has “stood the test of time” and consistently produced good music in South Africa.
