NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. The British Cultural and Heritage Association (KZN Branch of the 1820Settlers Assn) and Nedbank present the 10th anniversary in Durban of the Last Night of the Nedbank Proms in the Durban City Hall on October 9 at 19h30. A similar programme will be performed in the Pietermaritzburg City Hall on October 2 at 19h30. Thanks to the continued sponsorship of Nedbank, the City Hall will be alive with music, song and revelry in the tradition of the Albert Hall’s Last Night of the Proms in London. Richard Cock will conduct the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra, the Durban Symphonic Choir and the Maritzburg Singers in a programme which includes the overture to Die Fledermaus by Strauss, The Slaves Chorus from Nabucco by Verdi and The Dam Busters March by Coates. Before the concert the KZN Youth Wind Band will play on the City Hall Steps from 18h45 while the Caledonian and NMR pipe bands will open the second half and play after the concert in the foyer. In the second part of the programme, the audience can join in the fun with their streamers, flags and balloons and sing along to Jerusalem and Rule Britannia. Norraine Swanby will be the soloist in Elgar’s Pomp and Circumstance March No 1 (Land of Hope and Glory). To add to the entertainment the Celtic Dance Company will perform to Lord of the Dance. This year the Proms introduces up and coming young local artists Joyce Moholoagai (Rose of England) and Nomthandazo Mkize and Lwazi Ncube (Flower Duet from Lakmé). Professional trumpeter Prince Lengoasa, Johannesburg based and recently returned from Paris, plays Mac the Knife and What a Wonderful World. Full bar facilities run by the Durban South Round Table 143 will be available before the concert, during the interval and at the after party held in the basement supper room where music and entertainment will be supplied by the Dee’z M Bee’z. Programmes, streamers and hats will be on sale in the foyer. Doors open at 18h30. Dress code is smart casual or come in the best of British red, white and blue. Book at Computicket. Tickets range from R45 to R75.
