NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. Wind down the weekend enjoying laid-back jazz with Easy Street, a 12-week season of quality jazz at jus’ jazzin’ at 14Shearer Road on South Beach. The line-up for October is as follows: Oct 3: Velvet Sounds. Bandleader Des Wilson, a jazz musician whose involvement with the Durban jazz scene goes back decades, plays clarinet, with Owen Cresswell on keyboards and John Corlett on bass. Wilson is best remembered in Durban for starting the Blue Note, a musos’ jam club. Oct 10: Brother to Brother. Wake Mahlobo, drummer for popular township jazz band Stax, joins forces with his guitarist brother Duse Mahlobo from Malapoets. Expect something very different. Oct 17: Melanie Roberts Trio. Popular cabaret artist Melanie Roberts turns singing jazz standards into a classy act. Her smoky timbres are backed by Neil Gonsalves on electric piano and Philani Ngidi on bass. Jus’ jazzin’ has a restaurant, two bars and a cigar lounge filled with comfortable chairs. The music starts at 18h30 and runs through until 21h30. To book phone 368-7727.
