NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. In Peter Martens plays Bach, the Music Revival organisation presents a rare opportunity to hear one the pinnacles of the classical music repertoire, Bach's Six Suites for Unaccompanied Cello. Top South African cellist Peter Martens plays all six suites in one sitting. Martens, who is booked to play the same programme in Cape Town and Johannesburg describes the event 'as an almost sacred journey through some of the most ingenious, inspired and glorious music ever written'. Bach composed the six suites for Violoncello Solo together with the solo violin sonatas and partitas around 1720. In his post as Kappellmeister at the court of Cothen he devoted his time entirely to the composition of secular instrumental music. Martens, who hails from a distinguished family of professional musicians, is currently Principal Cellist of the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra and enjoys a particularly active career as soloist and chamber musician. The concert will take place on June 18 at 19h00 at Howard College Theatre, King George V Avenue on the University of Natal, Durban, campus. Tickets R50 and refreshments will be on sale. To book call Music Revival on 033 342-3051 or email chris@musicrevival.co.za
