NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. Durban director Jerry Pooe and his Eager Artists return to the Playhouse Theatre Loft with a schools production, Animal Farm Musical from April 25 to May 18. The play is based on George Orwell’s classic novel Animal Farm which is a set work prescribed for high school learners. The play has been adapted and directed into a musical version by Jerry Pooe. He looks at the relevance of the play in South Africa today and interestingly raises awareness that politics in England is relevant to South African politics. Animal Farm Musical is set in Barn Yard, introduced by human characters from South Africa then changes to animals of England. They share their hopes, frustrations, disappointments and realities in fighting for freedom that result to confusion of what is freedom. The show includes 12 talented and vibrant Eager Artists actors who recently finished their theatre season of Mine Ghosts Music & Dance Extravaganza last month. Animal Farm Musical is funded by the Playhouse Company and the National Arts Council.
