NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. Last month, Durban’s top bands blew the minds of audiences at The Winston. The event, which drew record crowds, aimed to raise money for the venue which was broken into and robbed of its PA equipment. “The mere idea of 14 bands playing over two nights could be criticised as a nightmare waiting to happen,” says promoter Dave Campbell, who was happy to report the complete opposite. “Averaging 12-minute turnarounds between bands every band was spot on schedule. The sound was outstanding and the turnout was a dream come true. Over R5,500 was taken at the door of a venue that can hold a capacity of 150 people. Without taking bar sales into consideration, close on R6,000 profit was made from the event. The money has been used as a deposit for the equipment needed to save the Winston as a live music venue.” Congratulations to all involved including bands, sponsors and audiences.
