NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. Matthew van der Want and Chris Letcher, who are about to start recording their follow-up to last year's critically acclaimed Low Riding album, will appear in Durban this week. The Durban gigs include songs from Low Riding as well as new, unrecorded work. The hardcore folk duo's first appearance in Durban will be on the newly-revamped stage at Cuban Pete's in Stamford Hill Road on September 8. On September 10, Van der Want/Letcher will open the first of The Studio Sessions at the Fantastic Flying Fish Dance Company studio and headquarters. After dancers have excited en pointe, the soaring voices of Van der Want/Letcher will fill the acoustically responsive space between the studios sprung floor and its high ceilings. The studio offers a tastefully well-stocked bar and comfortable seating. The Studio Sessions will be a monthly occurrence on the second Friday of every month and the dark and epic Ohm have already been booked for October 8. FFFDC can be found directly behind Troubadour Productions in Mayville. (Drive away from the city along Jan Smuts Highway with Westridge Stadium on your right, come to SPAR on your left then follow the road around the corner and turn right into Buro Crescent and take the first right into Saxon Avenue to No.16 – all clearly sign-posted with safe parking.) Enquiries from Peter Taylor on 209-0142.
