The KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra’s World Symphony Series Spring Season opens in the Durban City Hall at 19h30 on September 16 to run until November 25.

The opening concert on September 16 features conductor Wolfram Christ in a programme titled Southern Crossing which sees the welcome return to Durban of baritone Michael Halliwell. The soloist for the evening is oboist Clare Hollier. Works includes CPE Bach’s Symphony in D major, JS Bach’s Cantata No. 82 and Mahler’s Symphony No. 1. Highlight of the evening will be the appearance by the Sydney Conservatorium of Music Chamber Orchestra.

itled Classical Gold, the concert on September 23 will be conducted by Robert Maxym. Works performed will be Hadyn’s Symphony No. 43 (Farewell), Mozart’s Symphony No. 39 and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7.

Artists sponsored by the Royal Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Oslo will appear in the concert on September 30, appropriately titled Northern Lights and conducted by Ari Rasilainen. Soloists are Henning Kraggerud (violin) for the Sibelius Violin Concerto in D minor and Àshildur Haraldsdóttir (flute) for Nielseen’s Concerto for Flute. The other works on the programme will be Sibelius’s Finlandia and Tchaikovsky’s Suite No 3 in G Major.
