NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. Pieter Toerien’s production of the Webber/Rice smash-hit musical CATS has exceeded all expectations. Having passed its 150th performance CATS will continue to run at the State Theatre Pretoria until June 22 when it leaves for Beirut to appear in the Beirut Festival. “This is absolutely the last possible season extension and 40,000 tickets are now available,” says Pieter Toerien. “Having played to sold out audiences many people have stopped even trying to get seats. Seats for the extended run are now available from all Computicket outlets.” The CATS company will leave Johannesburg on June 24 together with the entire production (sets, costumes, props, etc) and will give six performances at this prestigious festival in Beirut which takes place at The Palace of Beiteddine in the Chouf Hills of Lebanon. The company then returns to South Africa whilst the physical production is shipped from there to Malaysia where they will perform for five weeks in September and October. Invitations have also been received from Taiwan and Korea which are likely to follow after Malaysia.
