The Rainbow Restaurant and Castle Milk Stout - the Jazz Brew will host the Sandile Shange Quintet in concert on April 28, continuing its programme of featuring KZN based musicians.

Sandile Shange is undoubtably one of the stalwarts of local music and, whilst he has had numerous appearances on the Rainbow stage with other acts, this will be the first time that he gets a chance to shine in his own right.

Sandile is held in high esteem by the South African jazz fraternity but is not widely known in the music mainstream. His group The Shange Brothers took Johannesburg by storm in the late 1960's/early 70's and to this day his style remains unique and difficult to categorise. His influences derive from a mixture of rural Zulu music and street-wise township jazz and he utilises his own home-made jazz chords in a finger-picking maskanda style.

He has accompanied countless jazz bands through the years and performed with distinction in Europe, most notably with Darius Brubeck. Many of the musicians that he has influenced and developed over the years have gone on to record under their own names. The year 2002 will hopefully see Sandile head into the studio to record his own material.

The doors open for the performance on April 28 at 12h00 and the Rainbow Restaurant & Jazz Club is situated at 23 Stanfield Lane in Pinetown. Tickets R20 at the door. More information from 031 702-9161 or 083 463-8044.
