NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. The Cinema Sublime art movies series shown at Berea Cine Centre every Sunday at 17h15 supports the NSA outreach programme. March 17: Bread and Tulips, an Italian-Swiss production, directed by Silvio Soldini is the winner of no less then David di Donatello Awards (Italian with English subtitles) Done in gritty Italian style (see preceding review by Billy Suter), this is the odyssey of Rosalba (Licia Maglietta), a forty-something housewife who is accidentally left behind by her family on a coach trip holiday. She decides to escape her dreary life (à la Shirley Valentine) and sets off for Venice where she finds a job in a florist shop and begins an unlikely friendship with a lonely waiter (Bruno Ganz). A gentle, wryly amusing story, this a deceptively simple, charming film that makes a virtue of understatement. The title is from a slogan used by American textile workers during a strike: "Souls, just like bodies, can die of hunger. Give us bread, but give us roses too". But Soldini preferred 'tulips' - "which filled the gardens of sultans".
