NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. During the KZN Philharmonic World Symphony Series seasons, Friends of Music offer pre-concert lectures in the Royal Hotel at 18h45. These are invariably given by local music critics or academics who present a deeper insight into the works to be performed. FOM’s chairperson Dr Vera Dubin is delighted to announce an unprecedented departure from the norm in that she has managed to persuade visiting Israeli conductor Omri Hadari to conduct the lecture. This offers an excellent opportunity to hear direct from the conductor himself the background to the works on the programme and an idea of how he will interpret them. The works include Mozart's Clarinet Concerto (performed by noted young clarinettist Dmitri Ashkenazy) and Symphony No.31 Paris as well as Mendelssohn's Symphony No 3 Scottish. Tomorrow night’s concert starts at 19h30 in the City Hall. It was originally booked for the Playhouse Opera because of renovations to the City Hall organ, but this venue has been double-booked because of the set-up time required by the incoming production Spirit of the Dance. Tickets R15 for the lecture booked at Computicket or at the door. Concert tickets also available at Computicket.
