The legendary TH Vinayakram, universally known as Vikku is coming to South Africa with his seven-member world renowned rhythm group to present Vikku’s – Rhythms of India titled Sapthaakshara.

This group won the UNESCO award for its performance in the International Percussions Festival held in Indonesia during January 2000 as a mark of its achievement during the grand millennium. The main theme of this group is to establish the richness of Indian classical percussion through various combinations of instruments accompanied by vocal support.

The spiritual slogans are framed rhythmically and set to different thalas or rhythmic cycles and played through the instruments rhythmically, pronounced rhythmically and sung by the vocalist with set melody suiting the fixed rhythmic pattern.

Performances will take place on February 19 at the Luxmi Narayan Hall in Mobeni and on February 21 at the Kendra Auditorium in Sydenham on February 21. Both performances take place at 19h00. Venue costs have been sponsored by the Government of India.

The Indian Academy of South Africa, which is co-ordinating this event, is hoping to acquire sponsorship to issue concession tickets for township audiences at R10 (which includes the bus fare).
