NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. Malombo was the first act to ever appear live on the Rainbow stage way back in 1983. In recognition of this fact, the new music producers at this legendary venue, Neil and Nicola Comfort, have invited Philip Tabane and Malombo to be the next featured artist on October 28. The current Malombo consists of Philip Tabane on guitar and vocals, Oupa Mahapi Monareng on Malombo drums, Mphunye Raymond Motau on percussion and Thabang Tabane Malombo drums and percussion. Oupa and Mphunye have been with Philip since 1976 whilst Thabang is Philip's only son. This line-up, as most critics agree, have a synergy and communication rarely found and experienced in music. In 1998, a Doctorate in Philosophy of Music degree was conferred on Philip Tabane by the University of Venda, thus the Dr. in the name of Malombo. The Rainbow Restaurant & Jazz Club is situated at 23 Stanfield Lane, Pinetown. Doors open at 12h00 and tickets are R30 at the door or in advance from Rainbow. More details from (031) 702-9161 or 083 463-8044.
