The 30-strong Durban Chamber Choir will present Madrigals and More, an "a capella" concert of madrigals and other works on October 16 at 19h30 at Howard College Theatre on the University of Natal campus. The programme will appeal to a wide variety of tastes.

A selection of madrigals tells tales of love won and lost: from the frothy French Il est bel et bon to the lovelorn Adieu Sweet Amaryllis. Sacred works take a journey through the close harmonies of the American spirituals, the sublime contrapuntal sonorities of German composer Heinrich Schütz's setting of Psalm 116, and an unusual meditation on a Bach chorale arranged by the choir's director. Several African and Scandinavian folk songs will complete the programme.

The Durban Chamber Choir has risen to new heights under the direction of talented young German doctoral student Markus Detterbeck. It is the only mixed-voice adult choir in Durban to tackle the considerable repertoire of sacred and secular chamber works. Their most recent success was a performance of the Te Deum by Charpentier with the Baroque 2000 ensemble.

Tickets R25 (R10 students/seniors) available at the door. Enquiries to (031) 201-9739 or 201-2734.

Madrigals and More will also be presented at the Lutheran Church in Wartburg on October 14 at 18h00. Enquiries for this concert: (033) 503-1021.
