The KZN Philharmonic's work with young people from schools to tertiary level sees two major events happening in September.

These are the launch of Majors and Minors, the orchestra's new children's music club, in the Durban City Hall on September 11 at 10h00 and the annual National Youth Concerto Festival performance on September 27 at 19h30 in the Students Union on the Durban campus of the University of Natal.

The KZN Philharmonic engages with thousands children during its ongoing schools concerts in and around Durban, Pietermaritzburg and further afield throughout KZN. Majors and Minors aims to provide follow-up contact with children who have heard the orchestra perform for them during its visits to their schools. A special music programme has been devised for the launch event to be conducted by Lykele Temmingh.

All schools are invited to attend this event, and should call (031) 369-9404 for booking details.

The National Youth Concerto concert sees the cream of young South African soloists performing with the KZNPO following extensive national auditions. The brainchild of the orchestra's conductor laureate, David Tidboald, the event has been held every year since 1983 during the orchestra 's Spring Season. The aim is to offer rising new music talent the opportunity of performing in concert with a professional orchestra.
