NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. The KwaZulu-Natal Youth Wind Band is desperately seeking funding to the tune of R15,000 so that they can take part in the International Symphonic Band competition in Vienna at the end of June. While the 52-member band has been sponsored by the Department of Arts, Culture, Science and Technology as well as Lufthansa, the shortfall is urgently needed for new uniforms and travelling costs within Vienna itself. In 1999, the KZN Youth Wind Band won a gold medal in Bangkok and is confident of doing as well, if not better, in Vienna. It is one of only three groups taking part in the competition which will take place at the nearby town of Igden. If you can help contact Werner Dannewitz, conductor of the band and principal of the Durban Music School, on (031) 304-1001 (w) or (031) 201-7096 (h).
