NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. This year not only marks the end of the millennium, it also marks the centenary of one of Africa's most significant and watershed conflicts - the Anglo Boer War, and the busy port of Durban in South Africa was the gateway through which this happened. Throughout South Africa on the sites of some of the key incidents and battles, commemoration events will be held at various times during this year. The focus on the Durban events is during the month of October. The commemorations are multi-fold and diverse, involving public and private functions, public exhibitions and civic happenings. The commemorations are to be sensitive to the issues surrounding the battles and to honour all the men women and children of all races and denominations who were affected by the war. The people of Durban have been encouraged to take ownership of the commemorations and to use it as an occasion of civic pride and tourism potential. Part of the focus of the commemoration is to remind the people of Durban that our city is steeped in history. More details of the Centenary commemorations from Publicity Matters on 202-9093
