The Playhouse Company Arts Education and Development programme will present nine of their local and talented artists and groups who participated at the Grahamstown Festival on the Playhouse Transnet truck at the Point Waterfront today (July 15).

“There are a number of talented artists who are regularly participating in various events and performances outside of KZN and our own people just don’t even know they exist!” says Trevor Draai of the Playhouse, who is responsible for the co-ordination of this one day event. “As part of the education and development program run by the Playhouse, we intend to bring this talent to the people of Durban and KZN by holding such events as the one at The Point Waterfront.”

The programme runs from 11h00 to 14h30 and includes artists such as Savela, The Ubuntu Cultural Group, The After Hours Dance Theatre, Lalela (past winners of the ’99 Battle of the Bands), the Nateshwar Dance Fusion (a delightful presentation of Indian fusion dance comprising 13 dancers who will present an eclectic mosaic of dance styles) with Amatsheketshe.

The funky up-tempo group Swiftlove, winners of the Independent on Saturday’s Battle of the Bands (2000), is one of the most exciting bands to come out of Durban in a long time. They offer a mixture of deep groove and soul as well as reggae, funk, African and Latin American rhythm. Swiftlove recently released their CD Tantric Drops.
