Macrorie House Museum in Pietermaritzburg is hosting a visit from Cape-based international antiques expert and restorer Emmeke van der Meulen in August. For the last five years, van der Meulen has run courses at the Killie Campbell Museum in Durban but this year her only KZN courses will be run in Pietermaritzburg.

From August 13 to 15, van der Meulen will give her Understanding Antiques Course which covers European and Cape Dutch antique styles, wood identification, buying guidelines and care.

From August 14 to 17, she will run a Practical Conservation Workshop at the Museum. This will give participants hands-on experience of working with museum quality furniture, treating damage and learning about maintenance and care techniques for furniture, paintings and textiles. There will also be an opportunity for participants to have their own treasures evaluated by van der Meulen. Van der Meulen prefers workshop participants to have done her Understanding Antiques course some time in the past.

The courses cost R400 for the first and R500 for the second which includes teas, light lunches and all course material. For information or to book, contact Marigold Rei at Macrorie House on (033) 394 2161.
