On March 14, the restaurant at the popular Shakaland tourist attraction near Eshowe was destroyed by fire. The fire, which consumed the dining areas, the alfresco food display area and the lounge/bar area, caused damage estimated in the region of R2 million. Completely razed were three thatched beehive domes. Artworks and Zulu artefacts were destroyed. Quick response by local emergency services, neighbouring farmers, residents and Shakaland staff prevented the fire from spreading further to the thatched accommodation, conference centre, school centre and cultural village.

Principal shareholders, operators and Shakaland management are busy planning the rebuilding of the restaurant.
