Congratulations are due to two young Durban architects Don Albert and Alex Pienaar whose computer-generated design for Durban’s R6,8 million Millennium Tower scooped the top prize over 53 entries submitted by KZN architects in a competition organised by Portnet.

The new tower will replace the existing Search and Rescue tower on the Bluff and is expected to be completed by March next year. Using cranes, sails, plants, shells and other organic and natural elements as reference, the pair have designed a highly contemporary construction which will move constantly and change colour at night according to the weather. It will be visible from far out at sea while onshore, it will be seen from the Berea and Umhlanga.
