NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. The City of Durban’s stand among the 600 at the Chelsea Flower Show in London made a significant impact at this major international event which sees entries from all over the world vying with each other to present the most impressive collection of their country’s plant material. This was the first time the City of Durban had entered a stand and only missed winning a gold medal, because some of the plants had been slightly damaged in transport. Curator of Durban Botanic Gardens, Chris Dalzell, proudly brought home a silver-gilt and affirmed that the stand made a strong impression on all who saw it thereby entrenching Durban as a city with a glorious natural environment made up of fascinating trees and plants. Also filled with crafted animals and insects, the 54 square metre stand was designed by Francois Lenferna de la Motte who works for Parks and Gardens in Durban.
