NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. KZN audiences and listeners will remember veteran actor and broadcaster, Kenneth Hendel who died recently in Johannesburg at the age of 75. With an illustrious career behind him, he was brought to South Africa by Pieter Toerien and Shirley Firth in 1972 to re-create the role of Roat in Wait Until Dark and he stayed on to make South Africa his home. He appeared in numerous productions for the Natal Performing Arts Council (NAPAC – now the Playhouse Company) and appeared in the SABC TV series The Settlers; She and The Story of an African Farm. His films made in South Africa included An African Dream and Prisoners of the Lost Universe. He wrote many series for Springbok Radio such as Tales of Antiquity; Medical File and The Bright Flame and eventually became head of Drama for Springbok Radio. When Springbok closed he was appointed head of magazine programmes for the English service of the SABC. After an unsuccessful spinal operation left him paraplegic, he took early retirement from the SABC but continues to write radio dramas for the Radio South Africa.
