Laurie Bloomfield has been part of the life of newspaper readers in Durban for at least 45 years. He was a photographer for the Daily News, moving on to become pictures editor for the Daily News and Sunday Tribune. He died at the age of 74 after a mercifully short battle with cancer.

In 1959, he became the first person from outside Britain to be awarded the Encyclopaedia Britannica British Press Picture of the Year award. He retired ten years ago but his photographs will continue to live on.
