NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. In the M-Net line-up this month (screened at 23h35 on March 27) is Million Dollar Baby, a drama starring Clint Eastwood (who also directs), Hilary Swank and Morgan Freeman. Clint Eastwood’s acclaimed Oscar-winning movie deals with an ageing trainer who turns a girl from the wrong side of the tracks into a promising boxer. Maggie is an uneducated waitress who wants to put her trailer trash background behind her. Believing she could be a fighter, she approaches Frankie, the gruff church-going owner of a run-down gym in Los Angeles, who tells her he doesn’t train girls. Anyway, at 31 she’s far too old. He eventually relents and under the watchful eye of Scrap, a former boxer and Frankie’s longtime friend, Maggie starts training. She wins her fights with remarkable ease, and the money starts rolling in. When Maggie’s attempts to give her mother a better life backfires, she realises that her only family is Frankie.
