On May 12, the University's Film Club in Pietermaritzburg will show Ruan Ling-Yu/Centre Stage, directed by Stanley Kwan.

This 1991 film is an imaginative account of the life of silent star Ruan Ling-yu, played by the glorious Maggie Cheung. The film combines documentary footage, clips from Ruan's films, and meticulous recreations of the shooting of those films, resulting in a complex and beautiful work which critic Jonathan Rosenbaum hails as perhaps the best Hong Kong movie he has ever seen.

The film will be shown at 18h00 in the CVA off Ridge Road, Pietermaritzburg.
