NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. In a new initiative, ColaborArt will host Art House Movies at the Margate Art Museum. The first in the series will be the evocative movie Koyaanisqatsi (Life Out Of Balance) which will be screened at 18h30 on May 8 at the Margate Art Museum. Godfrey Reggio's Koyaanisqatsi (1983) is a film with no actors, no storyline, and no dialogue. Minimalist composer Philip Glass was optioned to compose the score, and the result was, quite simply, astounding. What really makes this film is the instinctive, visceral power of its images and sounds. Koyaanisqatsi maroons its audience in an alternate version of reality that sheds disturbing light on everyday lives, and yet at the same time, produces an unforgettable cinematic experience that is pervasively engrossing. Take food and drinks as well as a comfy chair if preferred. Suggested donation R10.
