NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. Videovision Entertainment, the South African production and distribution company headed by producer Anant Singh, has acquired a slew titles for distribution in South Africa. Among the films acquired are Michael Moore's controversial Fahrenheit 9/11 which was screened "In Competition" at the Cannes Film Festival and The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things, screened in the Directors' Fortnight Section of the Festivial. The other titles acquired are Harold And Kumar Go To White Castle; Masai, The Rain Warriors; Racing Stripes; Resident Evil: Apocalypse; Sahara; Super Size Me; The Phantom Of The Opera; The Statement and The Triplets Of Belleville. Fahrenheit 9/11 is Michael Moore's reflections on the current state of America, including the powerful role that oil and greed may have played in the aftermath of the 9-11 attacks. The film is a provocative expose where Moore tells a story that no-one has dared to tell as he reveals the events that led the US into the apocalyptic September 11 moment and why the United States is now at war. The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things, adapted from the best-selling cult author, J.T. Leroy's remarkable autobiographical novel, is the story of a childhood turned inside-out, seen through the eyes of a boy, Jeremiah, and his mother, Sarah, who is an impulsive, insatiable, utterly lost young woman who works as a truck-stop prostitute in the southern states of America. "We are thrilled to have made these significant acquisitions for South African distribution," said Sanjeev Singh, Videovision Entertainment's Head of Acquisition and Distribution. "Fahrenheit 9/11 is a riveting, yet controversial film that reveals a different side of September 11. The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things is an extremely well-acted and powerful film which will have the same audience appeal as The Magdalene Sisters. We will be releasing Fahrenheit 9/11 in September in South Africa prior to the United States elections while The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things will be released early next year.”
