NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. M-Net’s legacy will screen The 2004 BRIT Awards, the world’s most celebrated awards ceremony, on February 22 at 11h00. Yearly, the Brit Awards honour the top of crop from Britain whilst acknowledging those artists from overseas that have had success within the UK. The show celebrates the achievements of an impressive cross-section of the British and international music scene with the honour extending to new artists who have successfully leapt to the forefront of 2003. This year’s BRIT awards ceremony, live in Earls Court, is said to be the best for over a decade, packed with more exclusive performances than before. No less than 12 of the world’s top names in Pop, Rock, Dance & Urban will perform live to millions. Lined up to take to the stage is the most talked about British rock band of 2003 – The Darkness. In 2003 The Darkness, almost single-handedly revived the spirit of British rock n' roll glamour while enjoying an incredibly successful year claiming the Number One spot with their debut single I Believe In A Thing Called Love and their debut platinum album Permission to Land. Performing for the first time at a major awards ceremony, are Busted who are out to shock and surprise fans with what they describe as a “very unusual performance”. Five-time Grammy Award Winner, Beyoncé, will jet in to team up with 21st century funk pioneers Outkast. Rap superstar and Eminem protégé 50 CENT adds to the star studded line-up. Having sold more records than any other American artist in 2003, 50 CENT makes his BRIT Awards debut. Another of this year's chart successes, the LA hip-hop collective Black Eyed Peas, renowned for their incredible live shows, will make their debut appearance. Their current album Elephunk has stormed the charts selling over 2 million copies worldwide and included the No.1 smash Where Is The Love and the top 3 hit Shut Up. The incomparable Missy Elliott, multi talented Alicia Keys & pop goddess Gwen Stefani from No Doubt will join forces to perform their own unique version of a Classic track. The host of The 2004 BRIT Awards will be Cat Deeley, one of Britain’s most famous TV personalities who hosts a multitude of shows on MTV UK and ITV, and is a regular on the cover of most glossy men's magazines in England.
