The story revolves around Augusten (14), a boy whose father is an alcoholic and whose mother is unstable. When his parents’ marriage goes into meltdown, his mother drops off him off at her shrink’s house where eccentricity is a way of life. Dr Finch is obsessed with sex and bodily functions, his wife Agnes eats dog biscuits, and as for their kids … Hope is a religious nut, Natalie is a rebel, and Neil is a schizophrenic. As Augusten tries to deal with the ongoing turmoil in his life, he finds himself doing things he never would have dreamed of.
