NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. The Alliance Francaise will host an art exhibition from October 21 to 31 titled Transitions and Translations featuring the works of artists Martin Burnett, Wendy Knights, Kathy Merrifield and Joy Savage. When these four artists look at change in the South African context, they see the world through the eyes of European people who were born and brought up in Central and Southern Africa. Whatever they do in the creative field, their work reflects both their cultural heritage and their vision of the Africa that has surrounded them all their lives. These exhibitors describe themselves as coming from the same white tribe of Africa – a tribe that is part of the transition around them - and their work is a translation of what they see. Martin Burnett has depicted the buildings of Durban, the busy, colourful, Southern African port which is home to him. Kathy Merrifield is fascinated by fellow KwaZulu-Natalians. Wendy Knights is intrigued by Durban’s colonial past and the monuments that the powers of the time raised in commemoration of their deeds. As befits someone whose medium is clay, ceramist Joy Savage is fascinated by the ancient geology of South Africa – of how caves became homes to animals, early Man, the Bushmen, and how the walls of caves became the first canvases of the first artists. The exhibition opens on October 21 at 18h30. More information from Marianne or Lindi on 031312 9582 or mail durban@alliance.org.za
