NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. A mixed medium exhibition titled Yimina is running at the Fresh Paint Art Gallery featuring local artist Welcome Danca with a selection of other mixed media work. The 2005 Nivea Start winner, Welcome Danca usually creates colourful acrylic masterpieces but has moved into a new medium using mixed media for his latest exhibition. His strong acrylic paintings are quirky images of life in South Africa, strong narrative, issue-based and humorous. He covers material not unlike the late Trevor Makhoba. Danca’s new work has moved into a new direction – rural / urban scapes – some fairly abstract. Danca used his Nivea Start award prize money to purchase much-needed art materials and shortly after that, he hosted his first solo exhibition at the African Art Centre. Since his explosion on the visual arts scene, Danca has held several solo exhibitions and exhibited at the Fresh Paint Art Gallery as part of the exhibition entitled Hayibo. Yimina runs from September 4 to 25 at The Fresh Paint Gallery, 60 Davenport Road in Glenwood.
