NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. A scoop for Kizo Gallery’s KZN Heritage Arts Festival is cutting edge digital artist Gavin Rain who will create much interest over four days in the Garden Court at Gateway as he publicly works on a huge 2x2m canvas. Based in Cape Town, he marries art with current technology and forces people to “consider the notion of understanding the visual (and thereby society) at multiple levels. To voice the idea that one needs to remove oneself almost entirely from the literal in order to comprehend that which is subtle, but nevertheless intrinsic,” he says. “The themes of my work often echo the style: Hidden in plain sight.” The painting, which will be worth in the region of R40,000, will be the prize in a major SMS charity competition in conjunction with East Coast Radio and The Independent On Saturday. Gavin Rain can be seen from September 19 to 28 in Gateway’s Garden Court. Entrance is free and all are welcome.
