NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. When Rocky meets Gladiator, and Titanic meets Ghostbusters, what do you get? Hollywood Rocks - an explosive tribute to some of the greatest rock music from the movies - which runs at The Barnyard Theatre at Gateway from April 22 to June 8. After the success of their collaboration on Roll Over Beethoven, Rock Me Amadeus and Glory Days, Duck Chowles approached Ian von Memerty to script and direct a new rock show for The Barnyard Theatres. Hollywood offered a veritable smorgasbord for Ian – think of all those great dance movies – Saturday Night Fever, Footloose, Dirty Dancing, and Fame. Featuring a talented ten–piece cast, led by Barnyard diva Ramaine Barreiro Lloyd, the show takes a time trip through the most popular rock and pop tunes featured in movies during the last decades. Who could forget the movie classics Eye of the Tiger (from Rocky), My Heart Will Go On (Titanic), Love Lifts Us Up Where We Belong (An Officer and a Gentleman), Sexy Thing (The Full Monty), I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing (Armageddon), Let The River Run (Working Girl) and I Will Always Love You (The Bodyguard). Adding a touch of drama are James Bond with Gold Finger (Shirley Bassey), Golden Eye (Tina Turner) and For Your Eyes Only (Sheena Easton) while the animated movies are remembered with themes from The Lion King, Beauty and The Beast, Tarzan, The Jungle Book. Tickets R100 pp from Wednesday to Saturday (R65 Tuesday night and Sunday matinees) and the Saturday Super Saver shows at R40 on April 26 and May 31. For bookings and enquiries, phone The Barnyard Theatre on 031 566 3045, e-mail gateway@barnyardtheatres.co.za or visit www.barnyardtheatres.co.za for more information.
