NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. Wild & Fragrant is a one woman comedy-drama directed by Bets Basson and performed by Barbie Meyer. The production is newly back from successful runs at the Grahamstown Festival, South Coast Theatre, Catalina and Rhumbelow Theatre in Durban. Barbie Meyer is simply passionate about Herman Charles Bosman's work and has the uncanny ability (albeit as an attractive blonde female!) to bring Bosman's stories, characters, poetry and in particular Oom Schalk Lourens himself, to life. Wild & Fragrant is Barbie's eagerly awaited third show on this fine literary master. Slipping in and out of clothes and characters, she gives a delicious, witty and thought-provoking taste of his hilarious stories and life. The show will be performed in Pietermaritzburg for two nights only at Rosehurst at 239 Boom Street. This will be the third time Barbie has been invited back to this particular venue. "It is absolutely beautiful at Rosehurst, it is not a theatre as such, so I perform on the 'stoep' - a jolly perfect substitute for Jurie Steyn's voorkaamer! I love the intimacy of this venue - and am so looking forward to sharing some more of Bosman's magical storytelling with his 'Maritzburg fans," says Barbie Meyer. Although Bosman was Afrikaans his works are written in English. Catch Barbie Meyer live September 5 and 6 at Rosehurst at 18h00 for 19h30. Bring your own picnic supper and/or wine to enjoy in the garden. Tickets R60 - booking essential and tickets are limited - on 033 3941443.
