NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. As a vehicle to showcase the incredible guitar playing skills of young Durban guitar virtuoso, 19 year old Chris Brink, The Dockyard Theatre presents Mr Guitar – Eric Clapton & Friends. This show celebrates the music of some of the best-known guitarists / singers. The show features songs by artists such as Eric Clapton, Carlos Santana, Gary Moore, Mark Knoffler of Dire Straits, Joe Satriani, Slash of Guns & Roses, Ritchie Blackmore Of Deep Purple, Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin and Jimmi Hendrix as well as a cameo performance by Dockyard owner Stuart Mey as Joe Cocker. The band is made up of Chris Brink on lead guitar, Aaron Nel on vocals and guitar, Bruce Boome on vocals and bass, Neil Singh on drums and a welcome return of Musa Vincent Mtetwa on keyboards. Since Stuart Mey presented A Tribute To Eric Clapton at The Playhouse Cellar in 2003, The Dockyard faithful have been eager for a reprise. “I have decided this time round to feature not only the music of Clapton but other guitar maestros whose solos have been burnt into our hearts and souls since we first heard them,” says Stuart Mey. “Who can forget the chills we got on first hearing Jimmy Page’s solo on Led Zeppelin’s Whole Lotta Love. Or the haunting intro riff on Clapton’s Layla (Derrick and the Domino’s version). How many people can sit still during the rhythmical latin strains of Sanata’s Black Magic Woman. These are songs that made the electric guitar into the most influential musical instrument of all time.” Eric Clapton & Friends runs from August 27 to October 5. For more information call The Dockyard on 031 201 9147. Tickets R150 include main course meal and show with additional courses (starters and desserts) at an additional R25 per course.
