This year, the Kora All Africa Music Awards 2000 provided a surprise award with the announcement that long-time favourites Ladysmith Black Mambazo would be honoured with a special judges award for their contribution to African Music.

Headed by renowned singer Sibongile Khumalo, the panel of judges for this event were selected for their diverse interest and knowledge of the music of Africa. The panel was Boncana Maiga and Toun Adedoyin (West Africa), Princess Erika (Central Africa) and Gallen TK Besson (East Africa).

The Lifetime Achievement Award went to Kofi Annan, Secretary General of the United Nations.

The award ceremony was hosted by top vocalist, Angelique Kidjo, Miss South Africa 1997 Kerishnie Naiker and Alex Taylor, Head of Radio France Internationale.
