NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. With more working percussion groups and drum circles than elsewhere in South Africa, Durban is a true mecca for percussion addicts. If you respond to a good beat, South Africa’s one and only drumming extravaganza will have patrons stompin’ away on August 18 and 19 at the BAT Centre. The venue is already well-known among percussion addicts for Richard Ellis’s weekly drumming circles. This year’s Rolling Rhythms Festival marks the fourth edition of the immensely popular event. Rolling Rhythms 2000 will highlight some of the many drumming styles found in Durban’s cosmopolitan communities, making it a must-see for all percussion enthusiasts as well as those new to the music style. The line-up features such popular and renowned drumming groups as the Intermito Drummers, Rich Ellis Project, Prelegalathan’s Garlands of Rhythm, Umgqumowe Africa, and many more. Established and is co-ordinated by well known percussionists Mike Mazzoni and Rich Ellis, Rolling Rhythms is always much-anticipated event for all percussions. It is a time when they can highlight their unique talent to houses packed full of appreciative audiences. Tickets R30. Contact the BAT Centre on (031) 332-0451.
