NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. Chicago- the Musical is finally coming to South Africa! This saucy and sexy musical is the hottest hit in musical theatre, with audiences flocking to Broadway and the West End to experience the show that inspired the Academy Award winning film. The recipient of six Tony Awards, two Oliver Awards, a Grammy and thousands of standing ovations, Chicago is Broadway at its best - a vibrant, sassy production with an extraordinary musical score and stunning dance numbers. After its 1996 revival debut in New York and over 10,000 performances later, Chicago continues to entertain millions of people across the globe. On Broadway and in London, it has joined the ranks of such long-running productions as Les Miserables, The Phantom of the Opera, Cats and A Chorus Line. A talented, experienced and acclaimed international creative team will mould a powerful, mainly South African cast and orchestra that will wow audiences countrywide, joining the proud tradition of spectacular Chicago productions currently playing worldwide. The show is due to open at The Johannesburg Civic Theatre, in April 2005 and then will move to the Artscape Theatre, Cape Town, for limited seasons. Auditions for the show are set for October under the eye of the Chicago's experienced international team of American director Scott Faris; choreographer Gary Chryst and British music supervisor Corin Buckeridge. Chicago - the Musical is brought to South Africa by INVESTEC and produced by Hazel Feldman of Showtime Management with a combined South African and international creative team.
